Kolkata Police Combat Evolving Threats in 2025
A changing crime landscape
The article explains how cybercrime has become an increasingly prominent challenge alongside conventional offences such as robbery, burglary, snatching and pickpocketing. It describes the restructuring of the Kolkata Police Cyber Crime Branch into six specialised sections to strengthen prevention, investigation, recovery and technical support.
Six specialised sections
The six sections cover cybercrime police-station work; organised cybercrime operations; cyber security and awareness; recovery of money lost to fraud; forensic examination of digital devices; and coordination with national, State and divisional cyber units. A Social Media Monitoring Cell also tracks objectionable content and coordinates appropriate blocking requests.
Awareness and enforcement
The feature highlights the Cyber Safety and Cyber Security Section and the ‘CyBuzz’ awareness bus, which visits schools, colleges, workplaces and public locations. It also refers to the 1930 cyber-fraud helpline, action against illegal international call centres and fake-SIM networks, improved forensic tools and efforts to recover defrauded money.
